Mt. Daisen

Visible from Matsue city centre on a clear day, Mt. Daisen constitutes the highest peak of the region (1,729 m) and is considered one of the most scenic mountains in all Japan. It is often referred to as the Mt. Fuji of the San-in Region. The Tottori Hanakairo Flower Road and the Shoji Ueda Museum of Photography are also located in this area.

Mt. Daisen offers a wide range of hiking opportunities. It takes about three hours to reach the summit on the most popular route (from Daisen-ji to Misen Peak). For your safety, please visit Daisen Information Centre and submit an application form before climbing. The mountain is typically covered by snow from late November to late April and provides western Japan with some of its best ski slopes.

Having been worshipped as a sacred mountain since days of old, Mt. Daisen is home to many old temples and shrines. Located on the slopes of the mountain, near Daisen’s village centre, the Buddhist temple of Daisen-ji flourished as a training area for shugendo monks. Located above it, at the end of Japan's longest stone-flagged approach (700 metres), is Ogamiyama Shrine, a Shinto shrine designated as an Important Cultural Property.

Offering a perfect view of Mt. Daisen, Tottori Hanakairo Flower Park is one of the largest flower parks in Japan. Free shuttle bus (Japanese) from JR Yonago Station (25 min).
